My Top 5 Reasons to Travel Solo
I’ve been travelling Solo for 4 years now. I remember the first time I travelled alone like it was yesterday. It was more of an escape for me more then anything, mixed with the desire to pursue my passion for travelling. I headed somewhere safe. Europe! What started out as a trip to rediscover myself became a trip of enlightenment. And from there my love for solo travel grew and has continued since.
Many people who hear that I travel on my own think i’m nuts or tell me how brave I am, That they wouldn’t dare do so. And throughout the years i’ve been able to convince a few people to try it out, and those that did thanked me, as they say it was one of the best trips they’ve done. So with out further ado here are my Top 5 Reasons everyone should travel on their own at least once.
1. GET TO KNOW THE REAL YOU
Traveling on your own without relying on anyone else to make decisions will put you on the spot. It will make you have to step out of your comfort zone. It’ll force you to interact to get to where you want to go. You’ll learn more about you on that trip then you would have otherwise. You’ll rely more on your gut instincts and intuition then ever before. It’s a beautiful thing when you finally realize that you can do it on your own. You’ll know your likes and dislikes. If you go somewhere and you get caught up in the moment and spend hours in one area, you can, and no one will be there saying CAN WE GO YET, or better yet if you go to a place where you just aren’t enjoying it YOU CAN JUST LEAVE
2. REMEMBERING WHAT IT’S LIKE TO HAVE A REAL CONVERSATION
This is one of my favourite things about travelling on my own. Is having real conversations with people you normally wouldn’t have. People from different areas of the world, different ages, different backgrounds. It’s amazing what you can learn from people. And how much you can teach someone else. Travelling solo forces you to interact with people. When you travel with just one friend, you tend to always talk to that person. Even if you are on a day tour, you won’t talk to anyone else more then that because you have a friend with you. When you’re on your own you realize that you actually aren’t alone. So many interesting people are doing the exact same thing as you are. So many people are travelling for the same reasons you are, with the same mindset. The same love of travel. Some of the deepest and most meaningful convos I’ve had with people were while i was traveling on my own.
3. CREATE YOUR OWN SCHEDULE
Wake up when you want. Sleep when you want. Eat when you want. Just got lost in the moment and do what feels right. No one can tell you what to do, where to go and how to plan your day. Just go out and enjoy yourself. If you want to stay at a certain destination and just absorb the energy, then you can do so. If you had plans to go a certain somewhere but ended up just laying down in the sun at the park, then that’s fine too. You have only you to decide what you want to do, so enjoy it!
4. APPRECIATE ALONE TIME, REGAIN YOUR INDEPENDENCE
We tend to forget what it’s like to be on our own. To have the sense of accomplishment, that YES, YOU DID IT! and you did it on your own, no one helped you, it was all you. People have this tendency of saying that being alone is a bad thing. Or that being alone makes you lonely. These are not true. Don’t confuse being on your own with being lonely. Surprisingly you can be lonely in the presence of other people. Being on your own is the best way to read and feel what your mind and body are feeling. Every feeling you get is magnified when you are travelling on your own because your feelings aren’t influenced by others. They are true and genuine, they are yours. With that you become more independent, you become confident. You trust yourself all that much more.
5. TREAT YOURSELF
This is probably the one thing I enjoy most. When you are travelling on your own you allow yourself to pamper yourself all that much more. Treat yourself that something nice. Are you craving sushi? a nice steak? Then go for it. Did you want to take the day to just sun bathe by the ocean or get a massage at a spa. Did you always dream of rafting? surfing? snorkeling? Do it!! Sometimes we worry about what others think? or would judge us by doing certain things. When you are on your own, you can do whatever the heart pleases. Take the time to treat yourself to something nice. And do so without feeling an ounce of guilt.
Basically I would suggest all of you take a trip on your own, once in your life. Even if it’s a weekend getaway up north in the woods. There is nothing more rewarding and enlightening then an experience like this. Do what makes you happy.
SO TELL ME HAVE YOU TRAVELLED ON YOUR OWN? IF SO TELL ME WHERE? HOW DID YOU FEEL? WHAT WAS IT LIKE?
