Alright ladies and gents, after a delay I am back blogging and will do so on a more consistent basis. My next blog is part of my sports venues series. Surprisingly it will not be a baseball or a hockey story but a football story. Let me begin by saying that football is not a sport I particularly enjoy watching and that I hardly follow the sport. In fact if it wasn’t for this one man I wouldn’t even watch football at all. And that man is…..
OH Tom Brady, what can i say. It’s a man crush, I’m allowed. I know a lot of people out there are haters but to me Tom Brady does everything right!
It was November 22, 2014. It must have been 5am as I got into my car and started my drive down to Boston. I was driving alone, because my friends had driven down to Boston the night before. I mean I could have driven down with them Friday night as well, but in all honesty didn’t want to miss my Bachata class (You heard that right, this in no joke haha) and I also happened to have had a date that night after my class. That, along with the fact I don’t really enjoy driving at night and would much rather be well rested and drive in the morning. Its a good thing I did because this choice made for one of the most interesting stories I’ve heard trying to cross the border.
So there I was at 6am at the US/Canada border. I turned the music down and approached the customs agent, said hello and handed over my passport.
C.A. (customs agent): Can you roll down all your windows sir.
**roll down my windows**
C.A. : Where are you headed?
C.A.: What for?
Me: Watch the patriots game! (with a grin)
Me: No sir, my friends already drove down, I’m going to meet them
C.A.: Their names?
Me: Anthony, Stefania, Jessica and Vito
C.A.: Okay sir, Do you have any drugs on you?
C.A.: You don’t do drugs?
Me: No I don’t
C.A.: How about any alcohol? Do you have any on you?
Me: No I don’t
*Now here is something I have never been asked in my life before, I swear I am not making this up and that this is a true story
C.A.: Alright sir, now is there anybody in your trunk?
Me: My TRUNK? (I was laughing at this point) Why would I have anyone in my trunk?
C.A.: What’s in your bag in the back seat?
Me: My clothes (as I reach back to open the bag)
C.A.: It’s okay you can go (hands me my passport)
Like WTF man, I didn’t get it, like why would I have someone hiding in my trunk, like I’m driving alone, I would much rather have someone to talk to hahah. I couldn’t believe it, was it my beard? My car? Do I look like a druggie? Man, Who knows!
I finally arrived in Boston. I met up with my friends hoping to go grocery shopping with them for the tail gate party but it seems they didn’t want to wait up for me and decided to go tailgate shopping without me, I figure it shouldn’t be too tough to buy enough food for a good tailgate party. How hard can it be? Little did I know they had very little tailgate experience (more on that later).
Surprisingly we ended up catching some good weather for the end of November. We also happen to have arrived on the weekend that they lite up the big Christmas tree in the Quincy Market. So we stayed and watched the festivities
You can also view the video of the Christmas Tree Countdown
We celebrated our night in Boston like everyone should when in Boston, beer, clam chowder and a lobster roll!
The Day I saw Tom Brady!!!
It was early Sunday morning. I couldn’t sleep much, I have been dreaming of this moment for so long. I was excited and nervous at the same time. Excited to finally Visit Gillette Stadium, excited to finally see Tom Brady live in action, doing what he does best. But I was nervous, was i going to be bad luck to him and the patriots, would he get injured before the game and i drove here for nothing, would this godly image I made Brady out to be leave me disappointed? I remember having this dream which felt all to real, I was holding a sign that resembled a checklist.
- Drive to Boston – check
- Visit Gillette Stadium – check
- Watch Tom Brady throw a touchdown – check
- Meet Tom Brady – uncheck
And there from the side lines Tom Brady pointed at me, Yes me and waved me over. I looked around, and said “WHO ME”? He nodded and waved me over, like when parting of the Red Sea, the crowd in front of me moved out of my way as I walked down the steps towards the field. I was getting closer, my heart raced, I was sweating, Tom Brady was getting closer, I was almost there, So close!! All I had to do was jump over the barricade and I was there. I stepped over, but my back foot got stuck, I fell, straight to the ground. I blacked out, all went dark. I screamed “NOOOOOOOOOOOOO” and then I woke up, i was still at the hotel, it was only 5:30am, game time was at 1. It was all a dream, kinda like a nightmare, I was out of breath, covers wrapped around me, it was bad, and I was sad.
As with every football game, there is always a tailgate party. I was excited, i’m a big boy, and I enjoy eating. We had brought a small gas BBQ from home, with some lawn chairs, we were set. I imagined a nice juicy cheese burger, chicken wings, bacon and some pieces of grilled chicken breast. YUMMMMMMMMM! Unfortunately my dream tailgate would not be so. There was Bacon though and beer, I mean at least, but for some reason my friends decided that hot dogs and baked beans with bacon were the way to go. THANK GOD there was beer, so I drank. The food was cooked;
Stefania: JR how do you like your hot dog?
ME: Like a cheese burger
Stef: Sorry JR we didn’t buy cheese burgers
ME: What kinda Tailgate party is this? Fine, mustard please.
Stef: Sorry JR we don’t have mustard
UGHHHHHHHH, luckily the pick up truck next to us had mustard haha. I was not happy
I looked at my watch its 12:00 TIME TO GET INTO THE STADIUM, I chugged one last beer and off we went it was time. IT WAS FINALLY FREAKIN TIME!!!! My stomach started hurting, I was nervous, kind of like that feeling you get before you go on your first date. It’s like you’re excited and happy but at same time your making sure everything is right, that you don’t look like an idiot, that you look presentable and that you don’t accidentally rip a fart so loud she will hear it. Luckily for me it was a football game, so I farted away with not a care in the world.
It was magical! It was a Beautiful Sunny day. The Stadium was gorgeous, Tom Brady was gorgeous. The Patriots played like a team possessed. It was like I was in a fantasy world. Nothing could go wrong. Patriots ended up smashing the lions 34-9. Tom Brady threw from 2 touchdowns. Life was good. and it zoomed by so far. Check out the videos below;
Overall is was a great experience, I didn’t actually get to meet meet Tom Brady. But who knows maybe this blog if shared enough will make it to Tom Brady. Now that would be sweet!!! I remember driving home in a state of euphoria. I couldn’t believe how well the experience, how well Brady and the patriots played. I even went home and slept in the jersey! Thanks for reading and please share this blog, as always comments are appreciated, both good and bad!
